Designers just want to have fun!

“the weirder the better”

Let’s be honest. Sometimes we need to disrupt our day to day to prevent burnout. When that’s the case, we stage a design revolution. “Coop Coup” is a monthly challenge where we go rogue with unusual prompts, letting our minds wander and our creative juices flow. No stakes, no critiques, no winners — just good old fashioned creative exploration.

As designers, our work is created with specific parameters in mind: color scheme, tone of voice, packaging specs, etc. Taking away those restrictions can sometimes feel strange and uncomfortable, but that’s why it’s so important. We find these exercises not only liberating but also instrumental in charging our batteries so we’re refreshed for the next client challenge.

One of our favorite Coop Coups was Photoshop Mad Libs. We started with a rapid-fire group brainstorming of nouns, verbs, and adjectives, and were randomly assigned a trio of words to illustrate. For example, the prompt: sad, bumpy, ice cream. The result: horrifying.

We spent the next 45 minutes combining all three with the magic of Photoshop — the weirder the better. You can’t beat crooning comfy gnomes, chilly spinning mermaids, and LOTS of belly laughs!
